in bar form

wailingbeansidhe asked: You are so right on with the mail-it-to-yourself suggestion. I'm going to be in Colorado next week and I am so afraid I'll forget to bring my papers with me. So I should send them to the apartment in Colorado rather than packing them. BUT WHAT IF FEDEX LOSES THE PACKAGE?!?! There is no end to the anxiety.

It is all going to be good, the statically likelihood of YOU loosing them is very low.

Another option I come up with are taping it to your body kinnda like modern day corset or drug smuggling - make sure to double wrap in plastic so you can shower with them. :)

I promised you a Gewgaws & Gimcracks giveaway, so here it is! The winner will receive the pendant at the top—a small glass and stainless steel vial containing a fragment from the Nantan meteorite fall in the 16th century—on a sterling silver chain.
If you love the other two pendants pictured, they’re available for sale in my Etsy shop.
Rules:
Liking this post gets you a point.
Reblogging this post gets you a point.
I’ll post again later in the day so west coast frayns and the night crew have a chance, too.
Only one like and one reblog per post—no multiple points for multiple likes/reblogs.
You don’t have to follow me to win, but everyone who already follows me gets a bonus point.
Everyone who already follows me and hasn’t already won a giveaway item this year gets a bonus point.
Giveaway closes at midnight Pacific Time, and the trusty Random Number Generator will pick a winner, who I’ll announce tomorrow.
Don’t enter unless you’re comfortable giving me your name and address, because I’ll need that to send you a necklace. I promise to keep your information completely confidential.
I ship everywhere the USPS goes.
Yes, I am really giving away a necklace. No, this is not one of those Tumblr fake giveaway scams.
Good luck!

let me explain - lesser of two evils

wailingbeansidhe said: omg people use MS Word for designs? You poor, poor baby for having to deal with that.

I work for financial services firm, I do a lot of training materials for our commissioned sales staff . We have had many of these document in design programs like Quark and InDesign, but when you constantly get massive changes through out 30-40 page document (never mind the 700 development binder AKA training material) it not really fun to have type set everything and massively time consuming.

I would prefer that we used InCopy along with InDesign but I been overruled due to cost and several senior designer do not want to give up control over type setting. They typically work on brochures, banners, poster, invites etc.. maybe a 32 page magazine quarterly. While I work on several “learners guides” and training materials at the same time which can range from 30 pages to 162 pages of screen shots or the aforementioned 700 page mega binder.

So I make the word document looks exactly like the other  materials, fonts, colours, design elements, spacing etc  - to the point where my boss questioned - did you do this in MS Word - yes I did.

I may not been the fanciest Graphic Designer but …

I do know my sh*t especially when it come to the dreaded MS Word files. So when the “senior” designer designs “a template” I would expect them to know there sh*t too, but they don’t.

Pro Tips for design documents in MS Word that do not look like sh*t and that make it easier for us “desktop publishing specialist” to use for 10 other documents.

1) Colour template/themes - use them so I do not have to keep typing the RGB or CMYK for the corporate colours

2) Styles - learn to use them properly, if you need to modify a style more than once in document - it needs it own damn style

3) Picture - make actual size not 150% of final size. Also do not expect to place 300 dpi images in the document and then be able to email them to anyone. Reduce the damn size to like 150 dpi

woodanchor:

Winnipeg Commerce Design Awards

Local designer Blair Helagson (Guppy Design) was commissioned to put his wood working skills to use in designing and hand building these tron like wood discs to be handed out to the winners of the 2012 Winnipeg Commerce Design Awards.

He turned to Wood Anchor when sourcing out a unique local wood species that would add to the prestige of his design. Blair really wanted to choose a species that he felt was symbolic of Winnipeg. That species was Elm of course.

If you have not heard of the Commerce Design Winnipeg competition have a look below and check out their website. There are some great winners!

The CommerceDesignWinnipeg contest rewards Winnipeg merchants for the exceptional quality of the interior and exterior design of their businesses and highlights the talents of Manitoba designers. Every year it will honour merchants who have called upon qualified design professionals to help them design or renovate their business premises.

First started in Montreal, Commerce Design competitions have now been run in cities across the world including Luxembourg, Marseilles, and New York. Businesses have reported improved visibility in their neighbourhood, an enhanced sense of pride on the part of their employees, and new customers. The designers of the Winnipeg businesses also enjoy greater visibility.

Contest developed based on an original concept by

the Ville de Montréal

Great work Blair!
